According to 0-1-1-1-12-9 Wayne M. Plymale I, his father 0-1-1-1-12 David Madison Plymale was a member of a committee led by "Bad" Frank Phillips to go into West Virginia and capture a member of the Hatfield Clan who had killed a member of the McCoy clan during the Hatfield-McCoy feud.  When they were closing in on the man they wanted, he was shot in the hip while trying to get away.  He was followed to where he was laying wounded and Frank Phillips shot him between the eyes!

He also stated that Frank Phillips went to Cap Hatfield's house one night to kill him.   Frank snuck in the house while Cap was asleep and placed the gun at Cap's temple and pulled the trigger.  He went back across the river and was telling his relatives that he had just killed Cap Hatfield, when the Hatfields on the other side of the river began shooting at them.  Cap Hatfield was among the ones doing the shooting!   Frank Phillips either missed with his shot or Cap Hatfield out-smarted him
